My original intention for this heading was going to be about
the ever seductive lure of fantasizing the 'dream' relationship
-- that which is unattainable or filled with too many expectations.
That subject has it's own merit and I am sure to revisit the idea
again in the future. From my own process in relationship, in challenge,
and change in my life I most recently recognize the power of dreams.
What I mean to say is as I change - my behavior, my approach,
my reaction to life - my subconscious/unconscious mind speaks
to me through my dreams. Now here is a great way to tap into creativity
while exploring more mindfully our inner world.
Begin to pay attention to times in your life when it seems there
are sudden or profound change - beginning or ending of relationships,
new job, moving, marriage, birth, death, etc. Did you notice yourself
dreaming more at those times? Did you happen to pay attention
to what the dreams were about and was there a pattern?
Dream analysis can reveal parts of ourselves we may not be aware
of or parts of ourselves we've pushed back in an effort to avoid
our feelings. I'm not about to get into listing what certain symbols
in dreams mean. There are plenty of books on the market which
will assist you if you wish to interpret what your dreams are
telling you.
Record your dreams and see if there is a story unfolding. It's
best to write it down as soon as you wake. The details inevitably
become fuzzy as time goes by. I keep a mini cassette recorder
on my night stand for this purpose. I can always listen later
in the coming days and remember the details with more ease. Combining
dream imagery with your creative process will undoubtedly be profound.
Paint, draw, sing, write, dance, even make a movie about your
dreams. It does not matter how you express.
